POSITION SUMMARY

The Med-Surg nurse will possess and have the capabilities to perform all the major duties and critical tasks of a Med-Surg Registered Nurse. Through the nursing process the registered nurse serves as a professional role model to ensure appropriate patient care, patient teaching and discharge planning is performed. Directs and guides activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of the Texas Nurse Practice Act.

Responsible for direct nursing care of patients in the acute care setting. Performs all aspects of direct patient care and works with other disciplines/ancillary services in the care they provide. 

  • Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care.
  • Communicates with the patient's physician regarding changes in patient's status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. 
  • Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. 
  • Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Licenses and Certification:  Current Texas Registered Nurse license BLS and ACLS required.

Education, Vocational Training, and Experience:  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with three (3) years RN experience within the last 48 months and 18 months of acute/Med-Surg experience. 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to write concise, legible documentation in patient's medical record.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from physicians, patients, other employees and the general public in person and by telephone.

Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures.

Rhythm recognition. 

Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.

Knowledge of safe use of various equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.  

Ability to with other members of the healthcare team to meet patient needs. 

Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, employees, supervisor and other hospital employees.
