Responsible for coordinating the nursing care of patients presenting to the Emergency Department ranging in age from pediatric to geriatric, who may present at any point on the continuum from illness to wellness. Performs all aspects of direct patient care and works with other disciplines/ancillary services in the care they provide. 

  • Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care. 
  • Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of the patient, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. 
  • Communicates with the ED physician regarding changes in patient's status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. 
  • Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. 
  • Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards.



Licenses and Certification:  Current TexasRegistered Nurse license, BLS, ACLS, PALS and NIHSS required.  ENPC and/or TNCC preferred.  CEN encouraged

Education, Vocational Training, and Experience:  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with minimum two (2) years current ED experience within last 36 months.   



Ability to write concise, legible documentation in patient's medical record.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from physicians, patients, other employees and the general public in person, by telephone and ambulance radio.

Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures.

Rhythm recognition.  Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.

Knowledge of safe use of various equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. 

Ability to with other members of the healthcare team to meet patient needs. 

Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, employees, supervisor and other hospital employees.



Lifting objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds occassionally with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds.  Ability to stand on non-carpeted, composite surfaces for extended periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl, reach, use fine finger movement, speak and hear.  Ability to walk long distances on a regular basis.
